A ten-minute method for reading any product, extended or home warranty: who backs it, what is covered, what is not and how claims work.
Warranty documents are written to be skimmed past. Don’t. Ten focused minutes with a pen will tell you what you are really getting. This method works for manufacturer warranties, extended plans and home warranties alike.
Minute 1: Who stands behind it?
Find the name of the company that pays claims. It may not be the brand or the store. If it is a third-party administrator, note who they are and how to reach them.
Minutes 2 to 3: What is covered?
Look for the coverage section. Is it a list of specific parts or systems, or broad cover with exclusions? Listed cover is narrower: anything not named is out. Note whether parts, labour or both are included.
Minutes 4 to 5: What is excluded?
This is the most important section. Watch for:
- Accidental damage, drops and spills
- Cosmetic damage
- Wear and tear, or the opposite: cover only for wear
- Pre-existing conditions
- Commercial use
- Consequential losses, like spoiled food when a fridge fails
Minute 6: How long, and from when?
Note the start date, any waiting period and the end date. Extended plans often start when the manufacturer’s warranty ends, so the real extra time may be shorter than the headline.
Minute 7: What will a claim cost you?
Look for deductibles, service call fees and caps per claim or per year. A plan with a high fee per visit may not pay off for small repairs.
Minute 8: Your obligations
Many warranties require you to register, keep receipts, follow maintenance schedules and use approved repairers. Missing these is a top reason claims get denied.
Minute 9: Repair, replace or refund?
Who decides? Can they replace with a refurbished unit? Is there a limit on how many repairs before a replacement?
Minute 10: Cancellation and transfer
Can you cancel for a refund? Can the warranty move with the item if you sell it? Transferable cover can add value at resale.
Write a summary
On the front page, jot down: provider, end date, main exclusions, claim fee and how to claim. File it with the receipt. Future you will be grateful.
