The Warranty Guide
How product, extended and home warranties work: coverage, exclusions, claims, your obligations and what to do if a claim is refused.
Every warranty answers the same few questions. Learn to find the answers and any warranty becomes readable.
Types of warranty
Manufacturer warranty
Included with a product. Promises to repair or replace defects in materials or workmanship for a stated period. Often requires proof of purchase.
Extended warranty or service plan
Bought separately, from the maker, the retailer or a third party. May add time, add accidental damage cover, or both. Read whether one is worth it.
Home warranty
A yearly service contract for systems such as heating, plumbing and electrical, plus listed appliances. Not the same as insurance; see the difference.
The questions every warranty answers
- Who pays claims?
- What exactly is covered?
- What is excluded?
- How long does it last, and when does it start?
- What do you pay per claim?
- What must you do to keep cover valid?
Making a claim
- Stop using the item if continuing could cause more damage
- Gather the receipt, terms and any service records
- Contact the provider through the channel the terms specify
- Describe the fault factually, with photos or video
- Keep a log of every contact
If a claim is refused
Ask for the reason and clause in writing. Many refusals can be challenged with the right records. See why claims get denied.
